CILP Queen Elizabeth II Stamps to be Withdrawn

From 31 January 2023, all CILP stamps bearing the image or effigy of our late and beloved monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, will be withdrawn from postal use.

In line with the UK Royal Mail's deadline to void non-barcoded definitive stamps bearing HM Queen Elizabeth's effigy from 31 January 2023, the CILP also considers this to be a suitable and respectful date to cease using our QEII local post stamps.

Unused stamps will still be available to collectors via our agent, Alpha Philatelics, but will no longer be applied to any local or international mail despatched or carried by CILP.

God Save the King!

Have You Got Your RAF Centenary Stamp?

Have You Got Yours?

On 1st April 2018, we released a very limited overprint of our 2010 RAF Hurricane stamp to celebrate the centenary of the formation of the Royal Air Force.

Only 22 copies of the 2010 'Salute to the Few' Hurricane issue were overprinted in red 'RAF 1918-2018', and sold through Alpha Thematics on eBid UK.

Some of our regular collectors only buy outstanding CILP issues once or twice a year. If you still have a gap in your collection where the RAF Centenary overprint should be, get yours quickly!

Low Stock and High Demand

CILP stock of this stamp is now below 6 copies and Alpha Thematics have been forced to restrict sales to one stamp per transaction and modestly increase its price to better reflect the market for this item. This is to ensure a fair distribution to our regular collectors and to reduce the speculation of at least two multiple buyers of this and other issues recently.

Record Price on eBay Italy

On 27 August 2018, an auction of an RAF Centenary overprint on eBay Italy, was sold for the silly price of £20.99 (23.45 euros). This is a record price as far as we know and there were no shortage of bids for the item!

If only the buyer and bidders had searched the Internet for CILP, the buyer could have saved themselves a fortune and bidders could have got an inexpensive copy for their collection!

Value for Money

We are not against others making money from our products, but we are not in the game of maximising profit at the expense of our hard won collectors.

CILP produces faux postage at a sensible price that meets our production expenses. This enables us to continue to produce varied and interesting cinderella stamps and help support this website.

We appreciate our regular and occasional collectors and look forward to serving you all for a long time to come!

Don't hang about, get over to Alpha Thematics and get your copy today!

Last of the Summer: Update

Goodbye Summer

There is a hint of autumn in the air and the nights are drawing-in fast. The garden has passed its glory and the swallows have already migrated back to Africa. All signs of a hard winter to come?
Swallows by AdinaVoicu - pixabay.com

But with the last of the summer wine and coming of dark nights, the time for stamp collections will be with us again - and boy do my collections need some work!

Postmaster's Update

The summer months are usually quiet in relation to stamp sales. There is still the odd collector sitting at his computer buying the odd stamp or two to fill gaps in their collection,  but nothing to get excited about.

But in the past week something curious has happened. I've had multiple large orders for CILP stamps. Some have been from collectors I recognise, but satisfyingly most are new names and I'm all the grateful for that.

Not only does it make my efforts worthwhile, the revenue has provided enough resources to put the next stamp designs into production.

Planned Stamp Issues

I have three stamp designs in their final draft stages. I had planned to have at least one of them 'on the street' by now, but time and tide waits for no man...etc. Normal life sometimes has to take priority! Here are the three designs planned for release in November:

National Health Service 70th Anniversary 1948

Having missed the official anniversary date of this fine and invaluable national institution, it is currently planned to include this stamp release with the two other national event stamps mentioned below.

Women's Suffrage Centenary 1918

The story of women's suffrage in the United Kingdom is an inspiring yet shameful episode in Britain's history.

The courage and determination of many unsung women who campaigned for the right to vote is an inspiring story, and one young women should not forget when they decide not to vote today.

Shameful in the establishment's contempt, violence and torture brought down upon women (and men supporters) of  the Suffragette and Suffragist movements.

First World War Armistice Centenary 1918

The slaughter came to an end in November 1918, at least in western Europe, but the dying and suffering continued.

Not only the suffering of those men who struggled with their mental health for the rest of their lives, but also the physical hurt that many had to bear. And let us not forget the families everywhere who struggled to understand.

New(ish) Domain Name

From 28 August 2018, Canvey Island Local Post will again be found on the Internet under our old domain name www.canveypost.org.

There will be no need to change your computer bookmarks as you will be redirected to our new domain automatically - clever isn't it?

Until next time, happy collecting!

The stamp showing a WWII veteran Hurricane was originally issued in 2010 to commemorate the Battle of Britain. It is being re-issued bearing a handstamped red overprint legend “R.A.F 1918-2018”. Only 22 overprinted stamps have been issued, each stamp is approximately 30x40mm. A limited edition of 5 Commemorative Covers has also been produced.

Happy Puddingmas Penguins!

On the 27th November the CILP released its first dedicated Christmas themed stamp. We have secured the use of an original cartoon, "Happy Puddingmas Penguins" by cartoonist Paul Munro, for our stamp.

The design shows four penguins all looking forward to their Christmas pudding. However,  one greedy fat penguin has beaten them to it! This cartoon is featured on Paul Munro's personal Xmas cards for 2017 and he has kindly allowed CILP royalty free use of the design

Only 75 stamps have been produced in horizontal format with full perforations and gum, each stamp measuring 44x25mm. No covers or FDI postcards have been produced for this stamp release.

This issue (subject to availability) can be obtained from Alpha Thematics on eBid UK

Famous Public Houses Stamp Set

Canvey Island Local Post (CILP) released it's Famous Public Houses stamp issue on the 23rd October, 2017. It is a four horizontal stamp set featuring Canvey Island 'pubs' that have played a defining role in community life for many decades and in one case, centuries.

The 'pubs' featured in a stylised pencil sketch style are; the Haystack, the Admiral Jellicoe, the King Canute (prior to the 1953 flood known as the Red Cow), and the Lobster Smack. The latter was used by Charles Dickens as the Ship Inn in his 1861 novel Great Expectations. All the other pubs have their own stories and history, both good and bad.

With the imminent demolition and re-development of the Admiral Jellicoe and the closure of the King Canute (formerly Red Cow), it is poignant and timely that the CILP should release this long planned stamp set now.

Unfortunately, it was necessary to omit equally famous or well known pubs and drinking clubs from this issue, such as the old Oysterfleet, the Canvey Club (featured on a vinyl LP cover by R&B band Dr Feelgood), and younger establishments such as the Windjammer of the 1980s, and the Silver Jubilee from 1977. We hope to include these in a future stamp issue.

A total of 45 sets and six First Day Covers have been produced. Stamps and covers (subject to availability) available from Alpha Thematics on eBid UK

Empire Flying-Boat Airmail 'Seaplane' Stamp

Canvey Island Local Post (CILP) released 4th September, 2017. It is CILP's first Air Mail stamp and is in response to increasing interest from overseas in CILP stamps and First Day Covers.

Seaplane Priority Air Mail Stamp

The design features the Imperial Airways 'Empire' Flying-Boat, "Calypso", with piggy-back S-20 mail carrier Seaplane from an original vintage postcard c.1938. It is a horizontal gummed and perforated non-value indicated (NVI) stamp, bearing the legends 'Priority' in English and French and the traditional 'A' for airmail.

The original postcard image was a generic illustration used on the front of a multi-view fold-out postcard, on which  seaside towns had their name printed on the top with a short message for tourists. The original postcard has the message, "Flying High with Views of Canvey Island".

The stamp will be affixed to all overseas mail for twelve months from issue (subject to stock availability). A total of 150 stamps and four First Day Covers have been produced. Stamps and covers (subject to availability) available from Alpha Thematics on eBid UK

B-17 "Heavenly Body II" Flying Fortress Issue

B-17 "Heavenly Body II" Stamp

The CILP is pleased to announce the release of a single stamp design on 19 June, 2015, entitled “Heavenly Body II”.

It is a direct tribute to the aircrews of two B-17 Flying Fortresses of the 379th Bomb Group, 8th USAAF which collided in mid-air approaching Canvey Island whilst returning from a mission to destroy V-1 sites in France on 19 June, 1944. Indirectly it honours all USAAF aircrews operating from England during WWII.

© 2015 CILP
The stamp issue is named after the nickname of one of the aircraft, B-17 42-97942. The other B-17 involved was the un-named 44-6133. Eleven men died in the incident and seven survived, some of whom came ashore on Canvey Island.

The stamp features a B-17 on an airfield in England, showing the 1st Division, 8th USAAF yellow triangle tail marking. The 379th was an element of the 1st Division but the aircraft in the image is actually from another 1st Division element, the 525th Bomb Group.

The CILP has produced a limited edition 270 horizontal stamps measuring 59x20mm. All stamps are perforated and gummed.

First Day Cover and FDI Postcard

An associated limited edition of 12 First Day Covers has also been produced. Each cover bears a pair of stamps with hand-struck FDI cancel.  The cover measures 162x114mm and features the 8th USAAF patch and has a detailed card insert describing the incident.

Six 'First Day Issue' postcards were also produced using the Dutch Cottage Heritage Postcard #1. They bear a single stamp on the reverse with a hand-struck FDI cancellation.

Early purchase of this issue is recommended as it is anticipated it will be popular with aircraft and military collectors in addition to Cinderella fans, especially the FDCs and FDI postcards.
